About Us
The Economic Rural Development Society (ERDS) owes its existence to the unwavering effort and dedication of Sri Madhu Basu. Founded in 1982, ERDS emerged in response to the escalating poverty in both rural and urban areas. Witnessing the growing levels of poverty, Mr. Basu felt a profound need to establish an organization dedicated to alleviating the misery and deprivation of the downtrodden.
ERDS is a non-profit, secular, and non-political organization committed to improving the lives of the impoverished. Its journey began humbly in several locations: Boral (South 24 Parganas), Vikahar and Khanjapur (Dakshin Dinajpur), and Thinagar, Gajole, and Habibpur (Malda).
In its initial years, ERDS concentrated on non-formal and adult education. Over time, the organization expanded its activities to encompass a broad spectrum of initiatives, including:
-
Women and Child Development
-
Protection of Children's Rights to Education
-
Holistic Support to Vulnerable Children
-
Human Rights of Indigenous and Minority Youth with a Focus on Women
-
Protection of Indigenous People's Rights
-
Anti-Trafficking Programs
-
Right to Work and Livelihood Security Programs
-
Women's Rights and Gender Justice
-
Women's Reproductive Rights
-
Rights for Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation
-
Rights of Indigenous People for Holistic Health
-
Livelihood through SHG Promotional Council
-
Skill Development Training
ERDS now reaches nearly 250,000 beneficiaries, reflecting the significant progress made since its inception. The organization remains dedicated to serving the poor and needy, aiming to lead them towards dignified lifestyles. Despite the substantial progress, ERDS acknowledges that there is still much work to be done in its mission to combat poverty and empower the vulnerable.
